After an extraordinarily long lifecycle (as in eight years to date), the Ford Fiesta Mk6 is about to go out of production. In its place, the bigger, more stylish, comfortable, economical, and tech savvy 2018 Ford Fiesta Mk7 will keep the subcompact flame alive.
Until this point in time, our spy snappers got up close and personal with the 5-door Fiesta Mk7 and the all-new Fiesta ST of the seventh generation. Now, however, the carparazzi caught the 3-door Fiesta Mk7 with their DSLRs. So what should we expect from the long-due replacement of the Fiesta?
For starters, this pre-production prototype can definitely tow stuff as long as the cargo trailer is on the small side of trailers. Secondly, do check out that front grille and the headlights. Not only does the car appear to be wider than the current generation, but it also borrows styling cues from its bigger kinsperson from the compact segment - the Ford Focus hatchback.
At the rear, I have a hard time deciding whether the taillights fit the 2018 Ford Fiesta Mk7 nicely or not. The units do have a little bit of Ford Focus and Ford Fusion facelift to them, though.
For what it’s worth, I am one of those who welcome the change from vertical to horizontal lamp clusters which stretch onto the rear wheel arches. Inside, the next-generation Fiesta will get better plastics, and fewer buttons thanks to the SYNC 3 media system.
Under the skin, the 2018 Ford Fiesta Mk7 is expected to ride on an updated version of the Global B platform. Yes, that means the twist-beam rear suspension will live on in the all-new Fiesta. Concerning engines, three- and four-cylinder EcoBoost units will be the norm.
A 1.5-liter EcoBlue turbo diesel is expected to be available for those particular Ford Fiesta customers who do a lot of miles per year and really need the better fuel economy.
