Ford engineers are currently working overtime to complete the development of the seventh-generation Fiesta. The subcompact has moved away from its early test mule phase to the current prototype stage you see here. In others words, the actual 2018 Fiesta, not a Frankenstein based on the old generation, is the vehicle you can see in these spyshots.
The Blue Oval designers seem to have strived to give the Fiesta a sportier appearance. The car appears lower than the current generation, with an important part of the credit going to various styling tricks.

For instance, the 3-door version seen here seems to pack a wider front grille compared to the 5-door model we showed you a while back. Then we have the taillights, which have ditched the vertical layout for a horizontal one.

And don't let the small steelies of this test car trick you into believing Ford has decided to give up on the sporty driving asset that has brought so much value to the Fiesta over the years.

Nevertheless, the automaker is also aiming to boost practicality. In fact, judging by the shape of the rear window, which seems to be slightly longer than that of the current 3-door Fiesta, we expect the rear passenger room to be increased.

While we can't see too much of the interior, the already-debuted SYNC3 (think: 2016 Mustang) infotainment system will bring a cleaner, more intuitive layout.

As for the engine compartment contents, three- and four-cylinder EcoBoost units will deliver a complete engine line-up. And while the current Fiesta range is topped by the ST200 (we've just spent a few days with it and we'll publish a story later this week), the next-gen Fiesta might even get the RS model certain aficionados expected for the outgoing model.

With the 2018MY Ford Fiesta set to debut next year, the test vehicles should drop some of their camo soon and we'll be back on the matter to bring them to you.
