As parent company Groupe PSA tries to defend itself in an emission-related investigation, Citroen takes to the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show to debut the C3 Aircross in the flesh. As a matter of fact, Citroen is the only marque of the French company that's present at the most important auto show of the fall.
With DS and Peugeot skipping the event over cost-control efforts, Citroen is alone at IAA 2017 with the Aircross. Developed as a replacement for the Picasso multi-purpose vehicle, the jacked-up member of the C3 family comes exclusively in front-wheel-drive. Clearly not meant for off-the-beaten-path action, the cutesy crossover is best described as an offbeat urban dweller.
Fitting neatly in the subcompact segment, the C3 Aircross features unique exterior design and innumerable customization options. Both the exterior and interior can be specified to the customer’s wishes, and technology is also at home in the little crossover. Highlights include 12 assisted driving system and no less than four connectivity systems, Grip Control, and Hill Assist Descent.
4.15 meters long and bristling with interior space, the C3 Aircross offers from 410 to 520 liters of cargo room with the rear seats up. Undoubtedly a step forward from the uninspiring C3 Picasso, the newcomer serves as the Citroen-branded counterpart to the Peugeot 2008. Just as it’s the case with the C3 hatchback, the Airbumps are optionally available for the new Aircross as well.
Bearing in mind the segment it competes in and the platform the C3 Aircross rides on, the engine list isn’t exactly impressive by any means. Three- and four-cylinder gasoline and turbo diesels reign supreme, with the entry-level powerplant packing 82 metric ponies (81 hp). For all that, the engines mirror what Opel and Vauxhall offer for the Crossland X and Peugeot for the 2008.
Over in France, the C3 Aircross stars at 15,950 euros. That’s exactly three grand more than the C3 hatchback and 750 euros more than the C4 Cactus.
