Introduced in mid 2008 and underpinned by the eons-old GM Lambda platform, the Traverse is about to be refreshed from the ground up for the 2018 model year. The second generation of the crossover SUV is going to downsize from the full- to the mid-size segment, all thanks to the General Motors C1XX “Chi” platform.
From the cryptic teaser image provided by the golden bowtie ahead of its debut on January 9, 2017, we can see that the all-new Traverse is more about space than styling. Hence, the profile looks as if Chevrolet took a cue from longroofs. The same happened with the compact-sized Equinox and, for what it’s worth, it is the way to go if interior space is paramount. In this regard, the mid-size crossover will offer seating for as many as eight occupants.
In the automaker’s words, the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is”expected to offer the segment’s best third-row legroom and maximum cargo space.” The golden bowtie also makes it clear that the second-gen model will be focused on technology, among which the automaker detailed the optional “D-Optic headlamps that provide natural daylight effect with a seamless light quality.” Produced by Magna International, D-Optic is a fancy way of saying led lighting. Magna also developed lighting tech for the 2017 GMC Acadia Denali.
Being based on the C1XX platform, the 2018 Chevrolet Traverse has a lot in common with the Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia. Specifically, the engine list will include the following two units: 2.5-liter LCV inline-4 and 3.6-liter LGX V6. As for the act of swapping cogs, Chevy will go for either of two transmissions: the 6TXX 6-speeder and/or AWF8FXX 8-speeder for transverse engines.
After it makes its debut at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, the Traverse will roll into dealerships later in the year with one objective in mind: steal a piece of the action from the Volkswagen Atlas and Mazda CX-9, among all the countless other three-row mid-size crossover SUVs out there.
