Even though General Motors dubs this the third-generation Equinox, it’s actually the second iteration of the breed based on the fact the platform is all-new and the design is a great departure from the ugly thing it replaces. What's more, it will be offered with the 1.6-liter diesel engine from the Cruze in hatchback form.
For the model year 2018, the Chevrolet Equinox adopts what General Motors refers to as the D2XX/D2UX platform. This architecture succeeds the old Theta and Delta II platforms. As you might have heard in our guide to GM platforms, the D2XX/D2UX boasts goodies such as MacPherson strut-type suspension, direct-acting hollow stabilizer bar at the front axle, and rack-mounted electric steering that was co-developed with TRW.

Compared to the preceding model, the all-new Equinox borrows plenty of exterior design cues from its platform brother the Cruze. Every little detail, from the dual-port grille to the Camaro-inspired taillights, makes the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox a better styling exercise than the MY 2016 update. On the inside, the compact-sized sport utility vehicle is just another day at the office for General Motors, complete with 7- or 8-inch MyLink infotainment.

On the safety front, the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is a huge improvement over the model it replaces. Standard and available features include things like the rear seat reminder, safety alert seat, Surround Vision, forward collision alert with following distance indicator, low-speed automatic braking, lane change alert with side blind zone alert, the whole nine yards in the compact segment.

Roughly 10 percent lighter (400 pounds / 180 kilograms) than the MY 2017 Equinox, the 2018 Equinox is available with a switchable AWD system that was designed with fuel efficiency in mind. Slated to go on sale in Q1 2017, the compact SUV will be offered with a choice of three transmissions and three powerplants. The entry-level offering is a 1.5-liter turbo with 170 HP, an estimated fuel economy of 31 mpg highway, and a Hydra-Matic 6T40 6-speed automatic. Then there’s the more powerful 2.0-liter turbo, which has 252 HP and 28 mpg to offer in conjunction with the 9T50 9-speed automatic.

Last, but certainly not least, the 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine. Essentially a reworked version of the 1.6 CDTi offered by Opel and Vauxhall in the K-generation Astra, the oil-burning engine provides 136 HP, 40 mpg highway, and a 6T45 6-speed automatic transmission. This setup will also be made available in the Chevrolet Cruze hatchback, which is also due early next year.

“It is an all-new SUV from the ground up and one that takes on the industry’s biggest competitors with a stronger architecture, greater efficiency, and more technology,”
declared Rick Spina, executive chief engineer of compact sport utility vehicles at General Motors. “And it looks great doing it.”
