2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 Spied, Out for Shelby GT350R Mustang Blood

Back in the ‘60s, the Z/28 performance package was added to the options list of the first-generation Camaro because Chevrolet wanted to pit its pony against the best the SCCA Trans-Am series had to offer. Nowadays, the Camaro Z/28 is a toy for big boys that want a more trackable car than the Camaro SS.

As indicated by the pre-production test mule featured in our extensive spy photo gallery, things get serious on a whole new level with the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28. First of all, check those massive carbon ceramic brake discs and similarly massive tires with no sidewall markings. If my eyes aren’t playing tricks on me, the rubber shoes of the car are made by Pirelli and the model is called P Zero Trofeo R.

The former generation of the Z/28 is wearing 305/30 tires, the Shelby GT350 ups the ante to 305/30 and 315/30, while the Hellcat makes do with 275/40. The 2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28? Those tires are huuuuuge, although I’m not sure if they’re 305/30s or 315/30s. They certainly look sticky, though.

Next up there’s the extreme aerodynamics. The gigantic honeycomb front grille, the canards affixed to the front bumper, the side skirts, the rear diffuser, the ultra-aggressive rear wing, everything has been turned up to eleven for the Z/28. I’m not the type to tell people “I told you so,” but the engineers behind the sixth-gen Camaro in Z/28 spec have definitely set their sights on the awe-inspiring Shelby GT350R Mustang.

The big question is, what’s hiding under the hood of this badass, track-focused beast? The most obvious answer is the LT1, the small-block that animated both the Corvette and the Camaro SS. Then again, the LS7 big-block V8 still has a lot going for it. All in all, naturally aspirated is the name of the game with the Z/28.

Slated to be revealed sometime during calendar year 2017 for the 2018 MY, the all-new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 will benefit from lightweight wheels, quick-ratio electric power steering, helical limited-slip diff, Magnetic Ride Control active dampers, and track-oriented performance traction management. Now let’s wait and see if the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 has what it takes to lap the grueling Nurburgring in less than 7 minutes and 32 seconds, the time it needs to beat the Shelby GT350R Mustang.
