Mercedes fans are going to cry foul on this one, but we've often wondered how last year's E43 and its twin-turbo V6 compares to the all-new M550i, which BMW dropped a V8 into.
We do agree that not every AMG model needs to have a big V8, but some of them do. For the E43, this is clearly a step back, as the previous generation had an E550 model with more power and torque than this.
When you pay so much money for a German performance sedan, you expect a few more boxes to be ticked. Yes, it needs to be fast and luxurious, but the sound should also be fruity. Not only is the soundproofing getting in the way of that, but Mercedes just didn't fit exotic-enough internals to warrant the AMG badge.
On the plus side, this Auto Guide review claims the E43 is surprisingly willing to change directions, which could be attributed to the 200 lbs it has less than the M550i. It also glides over bumps without feeling too loose or softly sprung. However, those points are deducted because the E43 is expensive yet doesn't come with enough standard tech.
"There's something about driving a car with a biga$$ V8 that makes you feel like a boss," says Jodi Lai, hitting the nail on the head. After all, it's this feeling of being better than everybody else that entrepreneurs strive for.
Interestingly, the M550i doesn't feel natural in the corners, despite supposedly being tuned by the M Performance people. The upside is that it offers a lot more tech, both standard and through options.
So it apparently comes down to what you want, the video concludes. However, we think a drag race or closer inspection of the design could have made the review more polarizing. A V6 Merc and a V8 BMW rival just aren't supposed to get along!
