There are prettier BMW concepts at the 2017 IAA in Frankfurt, like the Z4, but this brand new M5 is something you can buy right now. After the E39, the E60 and F10 comes the F90. It's more powerful than all its predecessors, but the real change is the in which that power is sent out.
Despite what the rumors said, the M5 hasn't gone hybrid. But like the Mercedes-AMG E63, it now comes standard with an all-wheel-drive system that can also send everything to the back wheels. The result is a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of 3.4 seconds, making it the fastest accelerating BMW of all time.
The new V8 reaches peak torque from 1,800rpm and has a flat band until 5,700rpm. The rest of the chassis is loosely based on the regular 5 Series, but with M tuning. So, for example, the gearbox is an 8-speed auto, not a DCT, while the suspension is double-wishbone front and multilink rear. To stiffen it up, the M5 has been given thicker anti-roll bars, new toe-links, and firmer rubber mounts.
We have no doubt that the M5 will be tuned to a million horsepower right after people get their greedy hands on it. But as standard, the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 makes 600 HP and 553 lb-ft of torque. That's about 50% more power than in the E39.
There's two of them here in Frankfurt, a standard one in Marina Bay Blue and the M5 "First Edition" which is finished in Frozen Dark Red Metallic. It also sports blacked out windows, a black grille and, you guessed it, black wheels.
On the inside, the First Edition combines Piano Black trim with Smoke White leather and subtle red stitching. Production cars will also have a numbered plaque for every one of the 400 examples to be built.
All sorts of crazy accessories have been added. For example, there's a carbon fiber engine cover and dual screens in the back of the car... because kids need to catch up on their Spongebob while having their organs disintegrated by the acceleration.
