BMW is working on all fronts to prepare the next generation of the 5 Series in all of its versions.
Among them is the 5 Series GT, which will reach its second generation once the prototype you observe in the photo gallery will become a production model.
The first ever 5 Series GT was not one of BMW’s most loved models, as its design and general idea were a bit complicated to grasp. Things were improved with a facelift, but the 5 Series GT was still seen as an unusual car.
The second generation of the car will bring a more elegant design, with sleek lines. We can observe this through the camouflage on the vehicle, so it is safe to say that BMW might have reached an adequate design this time.
We admit that there is also a possibility that the design of the previous model has grown on us, and that whatever comes after it is just better. As they say, only time will tell.
A quick glance at the prototype reminds us of multiple models in the BMW lineup. Among them is the X4, which seems to have influenced the shape of the roof, but the 4 Series Gran Coupe, and the 3 Series GT appear to have played their parts in styling this model.
Evidently, the 5 Series GT will still come with proprietary design elements, as well as a general line of design from the upcoming 5 Series. Concerning the underpinnings of the upcoming 5 Series GT, we know that the model will get an all-new platform borrowed from its sibling.
The platform will also bring a range of powertrains, and a plug-in hybrid version is also on the table. The car is expected to be exhibited at the end of this year so that you could see it in showrooms in the first quarter of 2017.
There have been some rumors that BMW has decided to change the name of this model into the 6 Series GT, and that the car would become the replacement of the 6 Series Gran Coupe once the next generation of the latter comes to the market. However, these reports are unconfirmed, so take them with a bigger grain of salt.
