2018 Audi RS5 Cabriolet Rendered

The world has no shortage of fast cars, but very few of them are convertibles and even fewer are Audis with all-wheel-drive. That's one way to introduce the this RS5 Cabriolet rendering.

The other would be to say that it has the engine from the 2017 Porsche Panamera 4S, a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 with upwards of 440 PS and around 550 Nm of torque. Those numbers or the probable 0 to 62 time of under 4 seconds don't impress you. However, you need to consider that the Panamera costs €113,000 while this one will be about half.

Well, not this one, because Audi's performance convertibles are expensive and heavy. In fact, the only RS5 I would consider is a Sportback because it's both sleek and fast.

Audi probably can't make the RS5 Cabrio any lighter by using a 2.9-liter instead of the 4.2-liter V; engineering doesn't work like that. But fuel consumption will be dramatically reduced from 14.6 liters around town to just 10 l/100km. That's not exactly a Prius, but for something weighing close to two tons, it's got to be impressive.

Why would Porsche give an engine to Audi? Because making V6s and V8s comply to emissions regulations is jolly expensive, which is why everything is now co-developed. It explains why the SQ7's massive TDI V8 is also found in the Bentley Bentayga and the Panamera 4S Diesel.

The only part that worries us is the gearbox the RS5 will use, because the 8-speed auto is good but not ideal for having fun. Maybe Porsche can spare a PDK, or maybe Audi doesn't even need one because the V6 is not a torque monster.

Our best guess regarding the ETA time of the super-fast Cabrio is 2018. Until then, you can enjoy this rendering made by X-Tomi Design or just order the S5 version that was just revealed last week. Or, if you don't need the space, why not consider the TT RS Roadster? It's a sharp dresser that can also reach 62 mph in less than 4 seconds and it produces all the delicious engine sounds you could ever ask for.
