2018 Audi A8 Spied in Detail, Shows New Grille and Headlights

As impressive as this generation of the Audi A8 has been, the next one will blow it out of the water. The quattro brand has already declared that there will be a range-topping rival for the Mercedes-Maybach S600, not to mention the first autonomous production car in company history.

Now we have a few fresh spy photos of the next-gen A8. Getting up close and personal with the sedan is like discovering an all-new Audi brand. The design is sharp enough that you can cut yourself just by looking at it.

The grille is no longer just something to feed air to the engine. It's got a 3D design that probably protrudes four or five inches from where it meets the headlights. There's only five horizontal bars in there, and no vertical ones either. The fact that they are set deep gives the A8 an air of sportiness. In some regards, though not many, it's even better than we expected.

These amateur photos published on Auto Plus suggest an entire fleet of A8 is on its way to a new test location. We also get to see the huge new taillights, but there's no exhaust pipe coming out anywhere on the car. It's got a fuel tank for sure, but that doesn't exclude the possibility of a plug-in hybrid.

The A8 is based on the MLB Evo platform, the same as the Q7. So we expect the car to lose some weight while gaining access to the electrically supercharged 4.0 TDI. The bulk of the sales will, however, come from the 3-liter turbocharged V6 found in the S4 and S5.

The range-topping A8 might become a whole lot cooler, seeing as Bentley's direct-injected 600 horsepower monster is perfect if you want to go after Maybach.

Inside, you're going to see the new infotainment system called MMI Touch Response. They showed it at this year's CES, and it's all about putting screens everywhere.
