Audi’s flagship sedan, the A8, will get a new generation for the 2018 model year.
It will not necessarily be a complete revolution of the premium sedan concept, but it will bring a significant evolution from multiple points of view. Going past the fact that Audi thinks about introducing an electric flagship sedan, the German brand is also planning a revolution of the interior of the next A8.
Audi representatives have previously showcased interior concepts that feature fewer buttons than current models, and the last of them was revealed at this year’s CES show.
It featured haptic touch, a digital dashboard, and much more. From the moment it was exhibited, rumors have emerged that most of the features will be present in the next A8.
The BMW 7 Series, one of the main competitors of the A8, already comes with gesture controls. This is the kind of gizmo that is not necessarily groundbreaking, but is just the thing that people expect from high-end sedans from premium automakers.
We can be sure that Audi will have fewer buttons in the next A8, but will integrate more functions into the vehicle.
The tricky bit will be developing an interface that will make it easy to implement as many features as possible without cluttering the menus and requiring a manual to use.
Unlike smartphones, automotive multimedia units must be developed to be easy to use and understand while the vehicle is in motion, without taking too much of the driver’s attention.
We expect the two Audi Prologue Concept cars to inspire the interior of the next A8, even if the production model will not get an identical passenger compartment to the one seen on the three exhibits. Instead, the idea of simplicity shown in the two concepts should be regarded in the 2018 A8.
Removing buttons from car interiors might sound crazy, but it does make the life of the user easier without eliminating any features. Audi’s A8 has plenty of buttons inside, and the next generation could sure use a “simplification” as soon as possible, so the MY2018 A8 should bring just that.
