Audi USA has released details about the all-new A5 and S5 models that will make their debut, as 2018MY coupes at the LA Auto Show.
It's a little unfair, considering that the Europeans have not only the A5 coupe but also the Sportback and convertible already. Not only that, but the engine range has boiled down to almost nothing.
The only mill you can order for this athletic-looking 2-door is the 2.0 TFSI producing 252 horsepower and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque. With a 6-speed manual, it will take you 5.7 seconds to reach 60 mph, while the 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch shaves off 0.1 of a second.
As for the S5 Coupe, it gets a standard 8-speed pure auto, standard quattro and a new 3-liter turbocharged V6 producing 354 HP and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque. Its 0 to 60 mph time is noticeably faster at 4.4 seconds. The closest competitor is the C43 AMG Coupe, equipped with a twin-turbo V6 cranking out 363 horses.
But you don't buy an Audi coupe just for the power; you buy it for the design and technology. From some angles, this all-new generation resembles the old one, but the Prologue concept has certainly left its mark at the front.
There's also a multitude of options to choose from. We don't have the pricing yet, which is not surprising considering this is a 2018 model we are talking about. But in typical Audi style, things like the LED headlights and the 19-inch wheels will cost extra.
The list of safety feature is incredibly long and includes active lane assist, side assist cross traffic alert and traffic sign recognition. However, we're mostly interested in the tech side. For example, the S5 can be ordered with quattro sports differential that shuffles the power around and will make you a cornering god.
Meanwhile, the regular A5 Coupe can be ordered with a sports suspension that's 23 mm (0.9in) lower. It features altered stiffer tubular anti-roll bars, dampers, and linear-rate springs. And for a better blend of comfort and speed, order the adaptive dampers which are joined by 10mm (0.4in) lower springs.
As with most other Audis, the Virtual Cockpit is a must if you want to stand out. However, it's up to you to decide on ordering the color head-up display, the 19-speaker B&O sound system or the best leather.
