It doesn’t just replace the DB9, but it’s the opening chapter of an all-new era for Aston Martin. The DB11 grand tourer, however, is missing something. According to the automaker, that something will be launched in spring 2018 in the form of the DB11 Volante.
“Testing has begun. Coming Spring 2018. #DB11Volante,” Aston Martin has written in a post on Facebook, confirming that the soft top convertible is a year and a half away. That’s a lot of waiting if you ask me, but then again, Aston Martin has a lot of things to do till the 2018 Geneva Motor Show or whenever the debut is set for.

From the three pictures of the DB11 Volante test mule, we spot extra bodywork covering the rear wings. However, that happens to be there only for testing purposes. The real deal, as everyone expects, will be bestowed with the DB11 coupe’s flowing curves.

What’s curious, however, is that none of the three teaser photos feature the front fascia of the car. Be that as it may, I won’t hold my breath for something different. It’s a sure bet the trademark grille and the Aeroblade aerodynamic trickery are here to stay.

Chopping the metal roof off will translate in a heavier car. The DB11, for reference, tips the scales 1,770 kilograms (3,902 pounds). Despite the weight gain, the 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 has enough output to make the not-yet-ready-for-production Aston Martin DB11 Volante feel hotfoot enough.

Thanks to 608 PS (600 hp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque, plus a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, the fixed-head version of the DB11 can hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.9 seconds. The future DB11 Volante should be one- or two-tenths slower, which is not bad at all for a plush ragtop grand tourer.

For those who want more than 600 horsepower from their confy grand tourers, Aston Martin is sure to prepare a Vanquish Volante for them.
