Now that the G30 BMW 5 Series has landed, we're all lusting for the range-topping incarnations of the Bimmer. And no, the 2018 M5, whose leaked fascias we showed you yesterday, isn't the only way to go above the M550i xDrive, as there's always the Alpina way.
BMW's favorite tuner (we should actually call the company a manufacturer) has been working on its 2018 B5 long before the new 5er was revealed and we've spied the pumped-up sedan and station wagon (B5 Touring) on multiple occasions.
We're now back with the latest spyshots of the 2018 Alpina B5, with the Sedan having been caught while visiting the gas station.
Traditionally, Alpina models only offer mild visual changes and, with the now-revealed G30, all the camouflage on the B5 test car we have here seems amusing.
On the tech front, the engine compartment will accommodate a massaged incarnation of the BMW twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8. The last B5 was animated by a version of the powerplant delivering 507 hp and 516 lb-ft of twist.
The new B5 may or may not match the F90 M5's 600 hp output, with the rumor mill currently talking about 580 hp. Nevertheless, the Alpina will offer an uber-tastic torque delivery, with this being a well-known characteristic of the company's lavish models.
Speaking of performance, we'll remind you that the G30 M550i xDrive is already quicker than the retiring F10 M5 to 62 mph (100 km/h), being able to cover the sprint in four seconds flat.
This time around, though, the M Division model will join the Alpina vehicle on the all-wheel-drive front, even though it's not clear whether the M5 will offer AWD as standard or as an option.
When it comes to the U.S. market presence, Alpina is active in America, but not with a full line-up. However, the 2018 B5 should make it past European borders.
