The current generation of the VW Polo dates back to 2009 and is still the most popular supermini. However, it's undeniably outdated and will thus be getting an all-new version for 2017. Care for some details?
Polos that are sold in Europe come from the Navarra factory. So Spanish media is a great place to look for details regarding the next-gen Polo. And what do you know? We found some.
Autopista says it has some of the tech details for next year's Polo. Besides only being available as a 5-door, the supermini will be more like a superlarge, growing about 20 centimeters to an almost unbelievable 4.17 meters.
The spy photos do support the notion of a larger car, but we didn't expect such a massive growth spurt. In fact, the 2017 Polo would be about the same length as a Golf from two generations ago.
The platform that will underpin it is called MQB-A0. But don't get too excited because it won't be anywhere near as advanced as a Passat. Yet despite the increased size, up to 70 kilos will be shed.
That's pretty amazing stuff, and I think it could take the base model below one metric ton. As for the engines, that's where this report really gets interesting, as it suggests Volkswagen really wants to crank down the TDI offering while making its gasoline range more efficient.
According to the Spanish, the base unit will be a 1.0-liter TSI with 70 PS. We can hardly believe it, since the naturally aspirated version makes the same amount of power. But I hate that thing, and I can understand why the Germans might want to get rid of it.
The 1.0 TSI will also have more powerful stages of tune, up to about 110 PS, after which the new 1.5 TSI will take over. Using the Miller cycle, Volkswagen will make it even more efficient than the 1.4 TSI while offering 130 or 150 PS. As for the diesels, their use will be minimized, as we've mentioned, and you will only be allowed to have a 1.5 TDI with up to about 110 ponies.
Finally, it seems we were right on the money with our speculation regarding the Polo GTI, which will indeed get a 2-liter turbo that's good for exactly 200 PS. Oh, and there's going to be a plug-in hybrid which uses the 1.0 TSI, but it's probably not going to be a GTE.
