Scandinavian design is a movement often described as being minimalistic and functional, and this is perfectly embodied by the most luxurious production Volvo in history, also known as the recently unveiled Volvo S90 Excellence.
You wouldn't say this is a special S90 just by observing its subtle exterior design enhancements, but jump inside and it all becomes clear. The entire car has been modified for one purpose, to make one of the two persons sitting in the rear feel like the very busy CEO of a large corporation, even if it isn't.

For that purpose, Volvo has removed the front passenger seat and replaced it with something called the “Lounge Console,” which was “designed to meet the chauffeur-driven executive customers’ need to relax or work while on the move.” We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

There is a rather restrained opulence inside, mostly thanks to features like a panoramic roof, a heated and cooled cup holder, an adjustable footrest, a built-in refrigeration compartment and a set of handmade crystal glasses from Swedish glassmaker Orrefors. The last bit is sort of ironic considering that the Volvo S90's production will soon be moved from Sweden to China, but we'll let it slide.

Since modern Scandinavian design wouldn't be complete without some state of the art features, there is also a built-in entertainment system that comes with a large display. The lucky rear-right passenger also has access to a rear-seat touchscreen control interface and a storage space that seems to have been designed for a pair of designer shoes.

The only powerplant available for the S90 Excellence is the T8 Twin- Engine option, which, as most of you know, is a plug-in hybrid four-cylinder paired with an 117 PS electric motor that only drives the rear axle. Thanks to a 9.2 kWh lithium ion battery that has a 6.7 kWh usable capacity, the all-electric range is around 45 km (28 miles), while the combined output reaches 410 PS and 640 Nm (472 lb-ft) of torque.

There is no word on pricing yet, since the model was just unveiled at the 2016 Guangzhou Motor Show, but you should probably pit the E-Class-sized model against an S-Class from this perspective.
