The second generation Volkswagen Tiguan has been officially revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show, yet we can't say we know everything about it. When will it arrive? Will it be made in Mexico or Chattanooga as well?
VW's sprawling Tennessee facility will add 2,000 jobs and increase its capacity by 30% in the coming years. Most expect this has something to do with the Tiguan or some other SUV model based on the MQB modular platform.
It's long been suggested that the Tiguan will go from being a single model to an entire family of SUVs, a bit like the Range Rovers. A performance model and coupé have been suggested, but the one most likely to arrive is the 7-seater.
In America, seven seats are the key to success these days. The Japanese are dominating the market with the Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander. The Korean automakers aren't doing too badly either, as the Hyundai Santa Fe has a loyal following.
From bumper to bumper, the second-generation Tiguan is redesigned with the global market in mind. It's the first SUV built on the MQB platform, and there are many more to come, including the Audi Q2, Q3, Skoda Yeti, Snowman and a yet unnamed SEAT model.
In Europe, the new Tiguan will become available early in 2016 with a choice of no less than eight different engines. America will be a little less lucky, receiving the Tiguan as a 2017 model year about a year from now.

Up next, we're going to check out a rendering by RM.Design that's meant to preview the 7-seater Tiguan Plus model. Of course, Volkswagen has already done this with the CrossBlue Concept presented at the 2013 North American International Auto Show. So what's changed? Well, the SUV is obviously longer and will also have a less sloped hatch to better accommodate the last two passengers.
