2017 Volkswagen Polo Mk6 Spied, Rides on MQB A0 Platform

There’s no other way around it. The Volkswagen Polo Mk5 is, even eight years after production had started, still relevant in its segment. Not only is it good, but the VW badge also plays a role in its appeal. Nevertheless, a new generation is on the horizon.

Ladies and gents, please put your hands together for the Polo Mk6, brought to you in camouflaged form by our spy photographers from CarPix. Caught in the same spot where the carparazzi spied the 2018 Volkswagen Touareg, the next-generation Volkswagen Polo is set to arrive in Europe in 2017.

Not only is it longer than the Mk5, but it also happens to be wider, more hunkered down, and more Golf-like when it comes down to proportions. It’s hard to observe the fine details due to the heavy camouflage, but one thing is sure: the headlights and taillights will be more Audi-like rather than VW-like.

From a technical point of view, the Volkswagen Group A05 (PQ25) platform makes way for an all-new vehicle architecture. Internally known as MQB A0, the next-generation platform is based on the MQB which underpins the Golf and, if rumors are to be believed, it will help the Polo’s wheelbase grow by as much as 90 mm (approx. 3.5 inches) over the current model.

Even though this prototype of the Polo Mk6 is gifted with a short rear overhang, it’s a certainty trunk capacity will grow to 300 liters (10.6 cuFT) or maybe more.

Regarding engine options, the lineup for the 2017 Volkswagen Polo will be focused on small turbocharged units. Starting with a 75 HP 1.0-liter three-banger, the Polo Mk6 will also be available with two turbocharged versions of the same three-cylinder engine (100 and 115 HP).

Further up the line, the 1.4 TSI and 1.6 TDI will make way for 1.5-liter turbo petrol and turbo diesel units. A more powerful 2018 Volkswagen Polo GTI is in the offing as well.
