For all intents and purposes, the Volkswagen Golf is the sweatshirt of the automotive world. But like sweatshirts, even the Golf can go out of fashion. Hence, the peeps at Volkswagen need to reinvent their perennial top seller as soon as possible.
Titled “World premiere in November: The countdown has begun for an extensive Golf update,” the cryptic release attached at the end of this story has no information whatsoever about what the mid-cycle update will bring forth. What’s certain, though, is that the Golf VII facelift won’t blow your socks off. Instead, it will be just a nip-and-tuck job, mostly on the inside.

As reported in an older story, the big news is that the infotainment system and instrument cluster from the Golf R Touch Concept will be applied to the production model. Having made its debut in 2015 at the Consumer Electronics Show, the infotainment system integrates gesture control. Yup, just like a G30 5 Series and a G11 7 Series. The 9.2-inch display will be a touchscreen unit.

The e-Golf Touch Concept that succeeds the Golf R Touch Concept offers yet another glimpse of what’s cooking. What I’m referring to is an “electronic voice amplification" system that will make it easier to communicate with the passengers seated in the back. What’s more, smartphone notifications on the 9.2-inch screen will make it possible for the driver to rear and reply to text messages on the move. Then again, it’s definitely not safe to text and drive.

The instrument cluster, by comparison, will be a carbon copy of that in the Volkswagen Passat B8, 2017 Audi A4, and facelifted Audi A3. Radio, driving information, phone services, navigation, you name it, the facelifted Golf’s virtual cockpit can be tailored according to the driver’s needs.

As far as the exterior is concerned, leaked images show us what’s what in the case of the regular model, the Variant, and the GTI. It’s definitely not a radical departure from the current model, but the facelift doesn’t look half bad. In the U.S., the refreshed hatchback will arrive for the model year 2018.
