Since its debut in Argentina in 2010, the Amarok went on to become a success story for the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles division. Nigh on six years after it came to market, the mid-size pickup truck is now the oldest model in its segment. Unsurprisingly, the manufacturer is working overtime to finish the development of the facelift.
Cue the 2017 Volkswagen Amarok facelift. Our spy photographers caught the first pics of the thing out on a cold-weather test in the country of Volvo and IKEA. The northern part of Sweden is one of most preferred places for automotive development because temperatures here can fall to minus 40°C (minus 40°F). That’s the sweet spot for cold-weather testing.

The only part of the ute camouflaged by the engineers is the front fascia, which hides the modern Volkswagen grille and a more attractive bumper design. The bi-xenon headlamps surrounded by U-shaped LED daytime running lights are similar in design to the current Volkswagen Amarok’s optional headlamps. The taillamps are similarly old. This can only mean that the exterior lighting of this test mule isn’t going to be carried over to the production version of the Amarok facelift. What about the revisions to the interior?

We’re able to see a cover on the dashboard of the test mule, which is a tell-tale sign indicating that the cabin will get a long-awaited refresh. The steering wheel is different from the current Amarok as well. Expect the cabin design of the 2017 Volkswagen Amarok to adopt the climate control buttons, infotainment system, and air vents of the Power-Pickup concept presented in 2013 at the Wörthersee Festival.

Speaking of that particular concept, doesn’t the chrome front grille look remarkably similar to that of the 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan? What’s more, the headlamps and taillamps of the Volkswagen Amarok Power-Pickup concept would suit the facelifted Amarok pickup truck perfectly.

Under the skin of the 2017 Volkswagen Amarok, we’ll find a familiar 2-liter TDI turbo diesel, the one offered in the most successful model in the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles stable - the Transporter T6. The motor will be offered in two states of tune: 140 PS (103 kW) or 180 PS (132 kW). Other than a manual transmission, Volkswagen will offer the Amarok facelift with a 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox.

The latter part of calendar year 2016 will see the refreshed pickup truck debut in Euro-spec guise.
