The electric scooter market is steadily growing month by month, with more and more bike producers coming up with their own models addressing most urban commuters. Time has arrived now for Vespa to get electrified and here’s its prototype as it was shown recently at EICMA in Milan.
It was only right that such a big challenge would be tackled under the wing of the Vespa brand. Although, Piaggio Group’s tradition in electric motors dates back as far as the mid-seventies. It was first to launch a hybrid scooter, and it was only a matter of time until the Vespa Elettrica project got born.

There are no technical details about the upcoming electric scooter, but the maker says that “the Vespa Elettrica will, first and foremost, be a true Vespa, bringing the very latest in electric technology to a vehicle that will retain all the features that have been vital to its success. The style, agility, ease of use and riding pleasure will be the same as the Vespa we have always known, with the addition of technological and innovative connectivity solutions.“

The production Vespa Elettrica scooter is said to arrive in dealerships sometime in the second half of 2017. The Piaggio Group is currently assessing the most advanced players in the sector on a global level to develop innovative technological electric motor solutions together, reason why the project isn’t ready.

Don’t worry though, the company will continue to make gasoline-powered versions as well. The whole range has been updated for 2017, coming in new colors and being fitted with retuned engines to meet Euro 4 standards.

An interesting new model in the range is the Vespa 946 (RED), which, as the name tells, it’s an all-red version of the classic scooter. The new model has been designed with elegance and style to raise awareness of this serious problem. It provides the chance to join the battle against some of the most difficult diseases mankind must face.

The revenue generated by the RED scooter will go towards initiatives fighting AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.
