2017 Subaru Impreza Sedan Concept to Debut in Los Angeles

Japanese automakers have always enjoyed a love affair with the big orange, so we're not surprised to see that the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show will host many of their debuts. We're already pumped up to see the Mazda CX-9 being reborn. However, a new Impreza is even better.

Fuji Heavy Industries' car division has just announced it plans to show the all-new 2017 Subaru Impreza sedan tomorrow. Alas, it's only a concept car, but it's more important than the hatchback one shown in Tokyo because nobody has seen this sexy sedan shape before.

That's right, we used the word “sexy” to describe the design of a Subaru, which is extremely rare. However, the sloped roof deserves our praises, and it looks like somebody has been taking a very close look at the Mercedes CLA-Class.

Of course, Subaru has a long history of coming up with production models that are way uglier than their preview concepts, the most notable examples being the BRZ coupe and the 2015 WRX.

Beyond the redesigned sheet metal, the new Impreza will be the first car to ride on the Japanese brand’s new modular architecture named “Subaru Global Platform” that will eventually underpin all of its core range. It should make it a little longer, wider, and still light enough to compete with the Honda Civic.

Subaru's trademark boxer engine and AWD aren't going anywhere. Earlier this year, Subaru announced that it would bring a plug-in hybrid to the US, likely the spawn of the Viziv 2 crossover concept. However, we can't rule out the possibility of the 2017 Impreza Hybrid being offered.

Such a car is available right now in Japan. However, it's more like a mild hybrid that offers small consumption benefits. The 2017 sedan will also accommodate a new generation of direct-injected engines with cylinder deactivation. Specifications remain a closely guarded secret, but the American cars assembled in Lafayette, Indiana, won't rock the boat.

With the production models expected to be ready by late 2016, we still have another year to go before the concept turns into a buyable reality. Hopefully, we'll have more details for you by that time.
