Toyota has just presented the mid-life facelift for its 86 sports coupe. However, Subaru is still working on its variant.
We don't know exactly what's going on in these photos, but it seems two 2017 BRZ models are in a workshop somewhere in the US, one black and one white. Nothing helps performance here, but it's still a new look for the most famous new Subaru launched this decade.

Will you buy the 2017 BRZ over the Mustang EcoBoost or the Camaro 2.0? Who knows, but it certainly doesn't come with a turbo. Fuji Heavy Industries makes both it and the 86 at the same factory in the heart of Japan, so we suspect the output will be the same: 205 HP and 156 lb-ft (212 Nm) of torque from a 2.0-liter boxer engine with new gear ratios for the manual version.

We don't know what's going on because we saw the leaked pictures on FT86club and expected they would lead to Subaru rapidly revealing the BRZ. But maybe Toyota doesn't want it to steal the limelight, especially as the 86 is moving from Scion to the Big T. There's no upcoming auto show that's big enough for this car except the one in China.

Most of the changes are styling-related. The front bumper closely resembles that of the BRZ STI Concept, featuring sharper lines and a subtle hint of a spoiler. The headlights and taillights feature the same angular LED design we see on recent concepts, such as the Viziv II.

Inside, we see that the steering wheel has a lot of buttons, something many people will criticize. We agree with them, as answering your phone is not a priority in a car like this. The screen seems to be borrowed from the Impreza, and there's a screen next to the rev counter. Finally, fake carbon fiber trim has been added to the doors and there's stitching on the dash, just like Scion's outgoing FR-S Release Series 1.0.

Overall, the 2017 BRZ plays by the Japanese rules by doing small updates that fail to give people what they really want. The good news is that Toyota and Subaru are in talks about a replacement sports coupe.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
