2017 Skoda Kodiaq Spied, Looks Out of Place Lapping the Nurburgring

A seven-seater crossover SUV on the Nurburgring? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the 2017 Skoda Kodiaq isn’t afraid to tackle the curves scattered along the 12.93-mile stretch of asphalt known as the Green Hell. Don’t, however, think that it will set a record lap time.

Word has it the most powerful iteration of the 2017 Skoda Kodiaq will get the 2.0 TSI force-fed engine from the range-topping Superb, a four-cylinder that is good for 280 PS (276 horsepower) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft).

The rest of the range will include the 1.4 TSI, 1.6 TDI, and 2.0 TDI mills. A plug-in hybrid model that combines the 1.4 TSI with an electric motor will join the lineup later in the Kodiaq's production life.

Being underpinned by the now familiar Volkswagen Group MQB platform, front-wheel-drive will be standard on the soon-to-debut Skoda Kodiaq. All-wheel-drive prowess will come either as an optional extra with less powerful engines or as standard with more desirable powerplants.

Penned by the team headed by Skoda design boss Jozef Kaban, the Kodiaq has been inspired by Bohemian crystal glass art and cubism. Schmancy talk aside, it seems to be as if the Kodiaq blends aesthetics and practicality. I mean, just look how massive this thing is! Despite its size, Skoda promises “remarkable performance both on and off the beaten track,” as well as a “dynamic, robust and strong appearance.”

Slated to make its world debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show in October, the all-new Kodiaq will be the first model to get the newest design language from Skoda, as well as the Czech manufacturer’s first-ever seven-seat SUV. Like the jaw-dropping VisionS Concept before it, the Kodiaq prides itself on a clamshell hood, bulging sills, square wheel arches, sloping roofline, and slim headlights flanking a wide grille.

If Skoda gets the trim levels and pricing right, then the Kodiaq is a commercial success in the marking.
