Referring to the 2017 model year, which is the most fuel-efficient passenger car on sale in the United States? At 58 miles per gallon on the combined cycle, that would be the Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid in Blue specification, which betters the likes of the Toyota Prius Eco (56 mpg) and Kia Niro Hybrid FE (50 mpg).
With the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show just around the corner, Hyundai thought that it would be interesting to squeeze out even more miles per gallon from America’s most fuel-efficient car. And so Hyundai did with the help of Ontario, California-based company Bisimoto Engineering.
Introducing the HyperEconiq Ioniq, a one-off that leverages on the hybrid platform and powertrain to return “well over 80 mpg” on the combined cycle. The most Bisimoto Engineering could do was 83 mpg combined, which works out to 99.67 imperial (UK) mpg or 2.83 liters per 100 kilometers.
As you can tell from the picture that depicts the HyperEconiq Ioniq, the concept went through many frugality-oriented modifications. First and foremost, the high-silica tires offer low-rolling resistance. Then there are the carbon fiber wheels designed by Carbon Revolution, measuring 19 x 5 inches. ARP wheel studs, Recaro Pole Position racing seats, Buddy Club aluminum brake calipers, Bisimoto pulse-chamber exhaust system, and Racepak OBD-monitoring electronics are also featured, as is low-friction engine oil (0W20).
The list of mods doesn’t end here, but continues with the Bisimoto Dream Aero kit (includes the retro-looking rear wheel covers), Progress Performance coilover suspension, enhanced e-generators, NGK spark plugs, optimized inertial supercharging during valvetrain overlap, and then some. With so many changes over the Ioniq, the HyperEconiq definitely is SEMA material.
Hyundai will display the one-off experimental vehicle at the end of the month in Las Vegas. The doors of the Las Vegas Convention Center will open on October 31 at 9.00 AM, and the show will conclude on November 3, 2017.
