We're pretty sure that everybody at Renault is secretly plotting to copy all Mercedes compacts, because the Megane GT reminds us of the sleek and stiff A-Class, while the new Megane sedan is called Grand Coupe, perhaps inspired by the CLA.
But just like their colleagues East of the Maginot Line, Renault have completely given up on 2- and 3-door cars. It started with the Clio 4 and will be complete when the Laguna Coupe goes out of production if that hasn't happened already.

The last Megane RS 3-door has unfortunately been made, and pretty soon every Renault will pretend to be a coupe by hiding its rear door handles like an old Alfa Romeo.

This week, Theophilus Chin decided to a 3-box Megane Coupe by playing with the sedan... sorry, Grand Coupe. We bet that if we looked back about three years ago, he made something similar with the CLA-Class, which, of course, never became a reality.

In this dreary dark silver color with those wheels, the 2-door Megane doesn't look all that unique. However, it still preserves some of the magic the Laguna Coupe used to have.

The part we don't like about the Megane sedan is that it still resembles the Fluence in the powertrain department. They got rid of the 1.6-liter turbo from the GT and added a 1.6 base unit with a CVT. Unless we are mistaken, that's specifically designed for Korea.

The fastest-accelerating 2017 Renault Megane Sedan can sprint from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 10.5 seconds. While the Laguna Coupe was no Porsche, it could still do it in 8 seconds or less with the best engines available. What's more, its sexy back end was emphasized with two exhaust pipes which were even fitted on those cars equipped with a 1.5 dCi.

But we're kind of getting ahead of ourselves. While the Laguna was originally meant to compete with the popular Passat, the new Megane sedan has to deal with the Fiat Tipo, the Peugeot 301 and other cheap models.
