While Chevy gave us black paint for the Silverado, Ram is serious about the performance of its pickup trucks. The 2017 Ram 2500 Power Wagon put on quite the show during its debut at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show. First, it demonstrated its extreme suspension articulation using four pillars placed under its wheels, followed by a slow crawl down a flight of steel stairs.
This display of power only served to highlight the new design of the vehicle, which focuses on black for the skirts and bumpers instead of paint or chrome. The facelift is just what the Power Wagon needed, as the two-tone combination will appeal to adventurers and hunters.
The new grille and tire-tread seat upholstery both look cheesy in the press photos Ram released earlier, but do the vehicle service in the flesh. In fact, looking at these live shots, we're more impressed with this than the SVT Raptor. The old Power Wagon was obsessed with chrome and had stupid side graphics. You couldn't show it to your friends because they might also laugh at the red grille inserts. However, the 2017 model fixes everything. Check out the black trim on the grille, rear bumper, mirror caps, wheel arches, headlights, and even the wheels.
Inside, we see that the headliner can be ordered in black, and the tread on the seats correctly copies that of the well-known Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tires. By the way, the Power Wagon rolls on 17-inch wheels and 33-inch tires.
Under the hood, things stay as macho as they've always been. You get a naturally aspirated 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine that puts out 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. This goes to the 66RFE six-speed automatic and a manually shifted transfer case.
The monster can tow 10,000 pounds, cross a 30-inch deep river without any problems and pull stranded vehicles using a 12,000-pound Warn winch at the front. We think it was best described by Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand and Ram Brand: "The Ram Power Wagon is an off-road, all-access pass, removing the limitations, instilling confidence and allowing owners to reach areas of recreation and lifestyle not attainable with any other pickup."
