Introduced for the 2015 model year, the Porsche 911 GTS available on the market now makes use of a visceral 3.8-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine. For the 991.2 facelift, the 911 GTS will have to ditch it in favor of a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged flat-6.
As Rennlist points out, a document submitted by the German manufacturer with the California Air Resources Board confirms the change. After the updated GTS makes its official debut in the following months, the only naturally aspirated models in the Porsche 911 lineup will be the R, GT3, and GT3 RS. The one to look forward to is the facelifted 911 GT3 RS, which will jump 0.2 liters in displacement.
But let’s get back to the 2017 Porsche 911 GTS. The outgoing model produces 424 horsepower (430 PS) and 324 lb-ft (440 Nm). If you skip past the manual and go for the PDK automatic, then opt for the Sports Chrono Package, the GTS outruns the Carrera S to 62 mph (100 km/h) in a hair-triggering 3.8 seconds. If my gut feeling is on the mark, the force-fed 2017 Porsche 911 GTS could offer 20 ponies and 44 lb-ft (60 Nm) more than the outgoing model, translating to better get-up-and-go.
The 911 GTS is expected to retain the choice between rear- and all-wheel-drive. Of course, the updated model will undoubtedly be available as a Coupe, Cabriolet or Targa, whatever floats your boat. On the styling front, expect the Carrera 4-inspired wide body to soldier on. The 991.2 treatment will bring minor changes to the front and rear fascias. Other things we should be expecting from the 991.2 GTS are a ZF-sourced rear-axle steering system and an electro-hydraulic lift system that raises the nose by 1.6 inches (40 millimeters).
My humble opinion is that the turbocharged GTS is going to be an interesting machine for the keen driver. It will be the most powerful force-fed 911 with RWD until the GT2 comes along, as well as the most powerful force-fed 911 to offer a manual transmission.
