2017 Porsche 911 GT3 Facelift (991.2) Looks Ready for Production

The mid-cycle update for the Porsche 911 GT3 has been first spotted by our spy photographers back in February. Now, however, Porsche Netherlands has let the cat out of the bag.

Porsche 3D Kleurplaat lets you download a black-and-white image of the 2017 Porsche 911 GT3, print it, have your kid color it, scan it with an app called Quiver, then render your kid’s drawing in 3D. The most pressing question is, did Porsche inadvertently reveal the 911 GT3 facelift before the car is supposed to make its debut or is this just an offbeat teaser campaign?

Dunno, but this definitely is the 991.2 GT3. AutoBlog had a go with the app and the end result is very close to the scarcely camouflaged 991.2 GT3 we’ve seen in spy photos. Up front, for example, the bumper has been redesigned. Now complete with much larger intakes and more aero-focused tricks, the 991.2 GT3 also adopts the headlights of the 991.2 Carrera and Turbo.

From the profile, nothing much has changed over the outgoing GT3. As for the hind, the 2017 Porsche 911 GT3 boasts redesigned taillights and larger intakes in the panel located above the boxer engine and under the rear wing. The rear bumper also appears to be a little bit different, but not by much.

Compared to the Carrera and Turbo in 991.2 form, the 991.2 GT3 is going to soldier on as a freely aspirated machine. There’s not much known about the 3.8-liter flat-6 lurking underneath, but chances are more than 476 PS (469 horsepower) are on the menu. It remains to be seen if the 3.8-liter unit in the facelifted GT3 will catch up to the 4.0-liter that motivates the 991 GT3 RS.

According to a previous report, the 2017 Porsche 911 GT3 will wash away the sins of the current model with by making a six-speed stick shift available for those who rather three pedals instead of two. Word has it the cog swapper will be the same unit that equips the fan-bleeding-tastic Porsche 911 R.

Other changes we should expect from the 991.2 GT3 are an updated Porsche Communication Management system, Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring, and other stuff that doesn’t even matter in a car as focused as the Porsche 911 GT3. The 991.2 variant I'm looking forward to the most, however, is the GT2.
