Opel engineers are hard at work near the Arctic Circle, where they are testing the second generation of the Insignia.
As you can observe from the spyshots provided by our friends at SB-Medien, the new German midsize sedan features a larger body. The next generation of the Insignia is set to feature a new platform, called the E2XX, first used for the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu.
Thanks to the high-strength steel used in its construction, the Insignia is set to gain several inches in size, but drop up to 140 kg (300 pounds) of weight.
The prototype in the photo gallery below features heavy camouflage, but we can see that it has a hatchback body, as the four-door sedan variant was eliminated from the range.
Like on the current model, the Insignia will have a front-wheel-drive configuration as standard, with an all-wheel-drive configuration as an option.
For the first time, the car might be available in a hybrid version, but there’s no official confirmation on that matter. However, we do know that the upcoming Insignia will feature new gasoline and diesel engines, along with updated transmissions.
The car’s interior will offer more space for its occupants, while the dash and infotainment system will benefit from a significant technological upgrade.
Concerning design, the car seems to have received some inspiration from Opel’s Monza Concept shown in 2013, but the new GT Concept could also have contributed some elements to its look.
Like the new Astra K, the Insignia B will feature LED Matrix headlights as an optional feature, the new IntelliLink multimedia interface with smartphone connectivity, fewer buttons on the dash, and new interior materials.
We expect the upcoming Insignia to boast some semi-autonomous driving features to improve active safety and comfort.
The new Insignia is expected to come to market as a 2017 model. While a showcase at this year’s Paris Motor Show is possible, the car might be launched in the first part of next year.
