After it had refreshed the Mokka, Opel is set to extend its offer in the sport utility vehicle segment with a compact-sized model. It’s anybody’s guess how it will be called, but still, one thing is certain about this future model: it is based on the Peugeot 3008.
Peugeot had launched the second-gen 3008 only recently. Compared to the first 3008, which was a yucky-looking MPV with a face only a mother could love, the all-new 3008 looks a lot better. The Peugeot 3008 also swapped the MPV-ness of its predecessor for the chunkiness of a compact SUV.

The vehicle architecture that underpins the Peugeot 3008 will be shared with Opel’s offering. The prototype in the featured photo gallery is far from being the finished product, especially when we look at the rear headlight graphic. On the other hand, the Opel-inspired front grille is a taste of things to come.

Being based on the EMP2 platform, the Opel compact SUV is expected to boast 2,675 millimeters in wheelbase. To put that figure into perspective, the Renault Kadjar and Nissan Qashqai share a wheelbase of 2,645 millimeters. If everything goes according to plan, the Opel SUV should offer a lot of legroom for the segment it delves in. On the mechanical front, do expect a handful of differences between the Opel/Vauxhall model and the Peugeot 3008.

Instead of the 1.2-liter PureTech, 1.6- and 2.0-liter BlueHDi engines of the Peugeot, the yet-to-be-named Opel is said to make use of what the Astra compact hatchback hides under its hood. Specifically, the range will start with a 1.0 EcoTec three-banger turbo, continue with a 1.4-liter turbo and a 1.6-liter diesel, and finish with a 1.6-liter turbo with 200 PS (197 hp) on tap.

Last, but not least, the name. As mentioned earlier, only Opel knows how it will be called. But considering that the facelift of the Mokka brought an X to the nameplate, the new kid on the block should also end with an X. This hunch comes courtesy of the Mokka X, the model that introduced "the segment identifier for future Opel SUV and crossover vehicles with the X emphasizing a more adventurous and rugged personality."
