There are though sport utility vehicles with off-road capability out there, then there are though SUVs which combine off-road attributes with a bit of luxury. The 2017 Nissan Armada is one of the latter and, as we were expecting, it’s not exactly cheap.

Like the preceding model year, the 2017 Nissan Armada retains the body-on-frame construction. Now available in 2WD and 4WD forms, the flagship SUV from Nissan is exclusively equipped with a 390 horsepower 5.6-liter Endurance freely aspirated V8 shared with the Titan pickup truck. On the cog-swapping front, this rugged giant comes with a 7-speed automatic.

When properly equipped, the 2WD and 4WD Armada offers up to 8,500 pounds (3,855 kg) of towing capacity. Best-in-class accolades include the second-row headroom of 40 inches and the second-row legroom of 41 inches. As standard, the base model is priding itself on an 8-inch infotainment system, Nissan Navigation with NavTraffic and NavWeather, heated front seats, Bose audio with 13 speakers, as well as a handful of safety features.

The safety front can be further enhanced with available bits and bobs such as Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW), Backup Collision Intervention (BCI), Blind Spot Intervention (BSI), as well as Around View Monitor (AVM) with Moving Object Detection (MOD). "While the new Armada is intended primarily for family adventures here in North America, Armada owners will benefit from its underpinnings as a strong, durable and authentic full-size SUV with ruggedness to spare,” commented Michael Bunce, the vice president of product planning at Nissan North America, Inc.

There are six distinct configurations to choose from, all of them priced according to the size, off-road prowess, and plushness of the 2017 Nissan Armada. The model lineup starts with the SV 2WD ($44,400 plus $995 in destination and handling) and continues with the SL 2WD ($49,150 plus $995), Platinum 2WD ($57,090 plus $995), SV 4WD ($47,300 plus $995), SL 4WD ($52,050 plus $995), and Platinum 4WD ($59,990 plus $995).
