With the convertible market dwindling all over the world, the Mercedes-Benz SL couldn’t have made an exception, but since it’s such a legendary model, it will take more than that for the Germans to drop it for good.
Just think about it: apart from its predecessor, all the other SL generations have been iconic cars - some more than the others. Unfortunately, this latest model has more in common with the one before it than the more distant relatives, slipping under the radar due to an unremarkable exterior design.
Well, following its launch in 2012, the current Mercedes-Benz SL is on its way to getting a mid-life facelift, one that looks like it’s going to give the roadster the usual changes all other Mercedes models got lately. That’s a new radiator grille, different headlight graphics and some minor alterations to the front bumper.
Well, these last bits might not be that minor when reduced to the area of the bumper (larger air intakes and a two-piece grille underneath the license plate holder), but they won’t affect the general aspect of the car that much.
The car is wearing silver and is seen pulling off from a traffic light somewhere in Germany. It’s clear it entered the final phase of testing, and it’s getting ready for the official launch next year, but the honest-to-God truth is all we care about is the AMG version.
Actually, the AMG Sport version (not yet confirmed) might be the perfect choice, as the SL is not really the sporty type, but more of a GT. On the other hand, looking at all the Black Series and the SLRs it spawned in the past, there is clearly plenty of potential.
But the latest experiences have shown us that the AMG Sport line is sometimes the better option over the full-blown AMG. Whether that will be the case - or if we’ll even have an SL 450 or 500 AMG - remains to be seen.
Until then, have a look at the car right here:
