2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe Sits Still with Most of Its Camouflage Gone

The Mercedes-Benz GLC must be nearing its launching date as its sightings are beginning to intensify. But with all the prototype cars currently crowding the roads of Northern Europe, the GLC Coupé looks like it stayed home, avoiding the curious lenses of spy photographers.
It even got so comfortable that it ditched most of its camouflage that was previously hiding the shape of its rear end, keeping some of the foil only on the rear door, rear bumper and the taillights.

As we’ve said before, the GLC seems to cope a lot more naturally with this coupé-ish silhouette than its bigger brother, the GLE, where it does seem like an afterthought. We’re not debating whether or not these cars make sense - they obviously do from Mercedes-Benz’s point of view, as they will sell like hot cakes - but whether there is some sort of harmony to their exterior lines. And the GLC clearly finishes in front of the GLE Coupé.

But what it needs to do if it’s to be considered a true success is to finish in front of its rival from BMW, the X4. The Bimmer isn’t currently having the same success as the larger model, the X6, the one that also launched this whole Sports Activity Coupé concept, but that isn’t necessarily good news for Mercedes-Benz, as it would indicate that there isn’t such a large market for this type of vehicles.

And it would make sense, considering that a coupé SUV isn’t a particularly useful car, so they’re bought for their image and their bragging rights. And when bragging is the ultimate goal, you absolutely have to go for the biggest possible model, otherwise you’ll just look like somebody who couldn’t afford the top option. And there’s nothing to brag about here. “Oh, look at me, I went for the more sensible alternative” just doesn’t cut it.

The video shows a parked Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupé with its driver fiddling inside and activating the power tailgate from afar. We would have liked to see the car from a different angle as well, one that would reveal more of its rear, but we guess that was a private parking and the camera man didn’t have clearance to go inside. Not with a filming device, at least.

If this video is any sign of things to come, it looks like Mercedes is beginning to peel off the camouflage from the GLC Coupé, which means we can expect to see some truly revealing images shortly. Until then, though, this footage is our best option.
