2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe (C253) Spied in Sindelfingen

About 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) from Stuttgart there’s Sindelfingen, a town with just over 60,000 souls and a thumping great factory. Other than the gargantuan assembly plant, Sindelfingen is the home of research & development for Mercedes-Benz. No further explanations are needed to understand why the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe has been spied there.

The coupe-like brother of the GLC follows in the footsteps of what BMW has done to the X3 with the X4. In plain English, it’s just a matter of repackaging. From the rear doors backward, the GLC Coupe mirrors the design of the GLE Coupe down to the most minute of details. The glasshouse, the taillights, the somewhat unattractive hatchback door, everything.

Despite the black camouflage applied here and there, it’s easy to see what’s what and, from the looks of it, the 2017 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe will sell like hotcakes. Expected to make its first public outing at the 2016 New York Auto Show, the compact-sized C253 will command a little premium over an equivalent GLC X205. The difference won’t be as dramatic as that between the mid-sized GLE and GLE Coupe, though.

The base model will come in the guise of the 220 d 4MATIC, which churns out 170 HP (125 kW) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. The GLC Coupe 250 d 4MATIC will up the ante to 204 HP (150 kW) and 500 Nm (368 lb-ft). On the gasoline-fed front, the 250 4MATIC and its 211 HP (155 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) will have to suffice for now, at least until the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43 Coupe comes with a six-cylinder powerhouse.

In the United States, the GLC Coupe will be initially offered with a 2.0-liter turbo-four in rear- or all-wheel-drive form. The engine is good for 241 horsepower (179 kW) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm). Slated to set foot on American soil late in 2016 as a 2017 model year, the GLC Coupe will be priced from nigh on $45,000.
