Mercedes-Benz is celebrating 130 years since its founder applied for the most important patent of the industrial age by revealing its all-new and state-of-the-art E-Class at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. The carmaker showed another teaser for the model, despite having been leaked in tens of pictures a few days ago.
January 29, 1886, represents a key moment in both human and automotive history, as on that day Carl Benz applied to the Imperial Patent Office in Berlin for a discovery that would change the world: "a motorised vehicle powered by a gas engine." This groundbreaking idea was the foundation for all the other automobile designs in the years to come.
To carry its founder's legacy forward, Mercedes-Benz has more than 90,000 registered patents and a long list of engine, safety, comfort and design innovations that were first introduced to the market in models from the German carmaker. All this vast experience will apparently be reflected in the new E-Class.
The new vehicle will sport an innovative plug-in hybrid drive system that, along with lightweight construction techniques and aerodynamic performance, sets new standards of efficiency. A new multi-chamber air suspension that ensures outstanding ride comfort and the new cutting-edge technology included in the new E-Class make it a pretty solid contender in the business segment.
According to Dr. Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of The Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, "For Mercedes, the inventor of the automobile, it was always clear that the next revolution in mobility would be the self-driving car."
Zetsche has been talking about the vehicle of the future since the world premiere of the self-driving Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion research vehicle, at CES 2015, when he stated that "People have been dreaming of self-driving cars since the 1950s. We at Mercedes were the ones who once turned the vision of mobility without a horse into reality. Now it's time for us to offer the possibility of managing without a driver as well."
Daimler's Board Chairman thinks that "Cars have become mobile homes, in the truest sense of the words [...] where people can pursue their dreams and fulfil their individual needs. This technology will give every occupant of a vehicle completely new opportunities to make us of valuable time."
The new E-Class now going into production marks a thirty-year tradition for driverless cars. In the late 1980s, the first experimental autonomous vehicles from Mercedes-Benz were part of the Prometheus project, while in 2013 the "Bertha Benz Drive" made possible for a self-driving S-Class to follow the historic route of the first journey ever in an automobile.
The German company has more reasons to celebrate, as recently the state of Nevada allowed Mercedes to test its fully autonomous, production model E-Class on public roads.
