2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon (S213) Spied in Germany, Looks Cavernous

The E-Class has always been an interesting proposition in the executive car segment. The model hasn’t been developed only to fill a gap between the C- and S-Class, but to be a versatile family car and a comfortable cruiser in T-Modell form. From the spy pics sent in by the carparazzi, it seems that the all-new E-Class will abide by that guideline as well.

What you’re looking at is a 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class T-Modell in pre-production form. Yes, it has halogen headlights. Yes, it is camouflaged around the rear. But you know what? These details don’t matter because a) entry-level models are popular with taxi drivers in Germany; b) the trunk appears to swallow up at least 24.5 cubic feet (695 liters) of shopping bags and other whatnots with the rear seats up.

As far as the interior is concerned, the longroof will mirror the dashboard design introduced by the W213 sedan, including the duo of 12.3-inch diagonal displays that merge to form a wide-screen cockpit. Base models won’t get this set-up, though. Instead, the most affordable trim level of the S213 will combine two round dials and a 7-inch display cluster with an 8.3-inch central display. The downside is that both the instrument cluster and central display are installed in a single frame boasting a high-gloss piano black look.

On the powertrain front, the lineup will start with a 2.0-liter turbo and a 2.0 turbo diesel, then top off with a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 put together by hand by a skilled engineer in Affalterbach. Unfortunately, a hybrid powertrain inspired by the E 350e Plug-In Hybrid sedan is not going to be offered for the wagon. If it gets to the United States, the S213 lineup will be comprised of the E 350 4MATIC Wagon and AMG E63 S Wagon.

It’s a shame that longroofs are a dying breed in the United States as of late, mostly because crossovers and SUVs are getting increasingly popular. Although Mercedes-Benz does offer the S212 E-Class Wagon in the U.S. for $59,900, I’m afraid there’s a possibility that the S213 E-Class Wagon won’t make it Stateside.
