Following much speculation and tons and tons of spy shots and videos, the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class has now been officially confirmed to make its debut in less than two months, at the 2016 Detroit Motor Show.
The new sedan is a very important model for Mercedes-Benz, who is looking to overtake BMW as the number one premium brand worldwide as soon as possible (but no later than 2020, as the company’s self-imposed deadline states). Unless something very spectacular and nearly impossible happens, the Stuttgart company will switch places with Audi at the end of this year, moving up to second after trailing behind the two competing German brands for many years.
The E-Class isn’t just an image vector, like the Mercedes-AMG GT, for example, but a very strong contributor to the overall sales numbers for Mercedes-Benz. Or at least it used to be, before that job fell pretty much completely into the hands of SUVs and crossovers. But if we’re to believe what Mercedes-Benz is saying, the new E-Class has all the prerequisites to convince a lot of people that all they need is an executive sedan.
The announcement was made by Gorden Wagener, the brand’s design chief, while talking to British media outlet Autocar. According to him, the 2017 E-Class comes with an “all-new design,” even though the spy shots we’ve seen so far tend to disagree with that opinion, the E-segment sedan looking very much like a smaller S-Class or a larger C-Class. But he continues saying the design is “much cleaner than even the C-Class and S-Class.”
Wagener also clears up part of the mystery surrounding the E-Class’ instrument cluster, saying the new car comes with two 12-inch “glossy” screens, which means that at least in its higher specs, the new model will have a fully digital dashboard.
The car has received the final sign-off last week and is currently undergoing its final tests before a trip to the Motor City in the U.S. early next year.
