The new Mercedes-Benz SL has been all but confirmed for a late November launch at the Los Angeles Auto Show, but that doesn’t mean that testing has ended. Especially when there’s the SL63 version to think about as well.
To our knowledge, this is the first time the new Mercedes-AMG SL63 has been spotted, so it kind of makes it a big deal.

The front end of the new AMG SL63 seems to be heavily modified, with the now customary new headlight graphics being the smallest of changes. The sportier roadster will get a new grille as well, but the biggest changes come in the lower part of the front fascia, where the SL appears to have undergone the most important transformations.

If you remember, the current model has a big, one-piece, central air vent below the grille and just above the splitter, flanked by two smaller ones. All three of them go for a square-angled approach with rounded corners, something Mercedes-Benz designers must now think is so last-decade.

The new one has the AMG trade-marked “gaping mouths” on each side of the front bumper, with the DRL (daytime running lights) now integrated into the headlight design. What’s in between the two air intakes is still up for debate, but it looks like the lower grille might be split this time by a few blades matching the body’s color. At least that’s what we’d do if we were in charge, as the current model looks a little off-balance, like there’s nothing down below to hold its upper weight.

The funny part is that this black-masked Mercedes-AMG SL63 was spotted on Halloween day, making its dark appearance look even more suited to the occasion. On the other hand, its deep brown paint does an excellent job at hiding fine details, so that’s probably a more likely explanation for the color choice.
