2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R Teased, Leaves Its Mark on the Nurburgring

The ultimate four-wheeled weapon in the Mercedes-AMG arsenal is a lean, mean, green machine with a fixed rear wing made from carbon fiber. As expected, the peeps at Mercedes-AMG cannot their excitement and wait for the GT R to debut on June 24.

Where will we see the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R wag its tail out like an overjoyed dog? According to the German automaker, the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed is the place to be. Let’s start with the most obvious detail about the GT R, as in the paintwork. This finish is the latest addition to the Designo Magno family. Its specialness comes in the form of an ultra-durable nano-technology clearcoat embedded with tiny ceramic particles and a matte topcoat.

Other highlight exterior features of the Mercedes-AMG GT R come in the form of an aggressive rear wing made from carbon fiber, roof and door mirrors made from the same material, beefier wheel arches, ventilated hood, center exhaust system, W194 300 SL-inspired front grille with vertical slats, and massive air intakes on the sides of the bumper.

Inside, AMG's GT R street-legal track monster boasts yellow seat belts, body-hugging bucket seats, and Alcantara on the steering wheel. Underneath the skin, the model features a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 with more power than the 503 HP offered by the engine in the GT S. If you look at the license plate of the teased car, you’ll see that it reads 585, as in 585 PS. Converted to mechanical horsepower, that’ll be 577 HP.

Another thing that got us a bit intrigued is the hashtag Mercedes-AMG used to tease the GT R on social media. What does #BeastOfTheGreenHell stand for? My gut is telling me that this hashtag is a sign that the GT R is faster around the Nurburgring than the 2016 Dodge Viper ACR, the record holder for the fastest front-engine, rear-wheel-drive production car on the Green Hell. More to the point, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG GT R could lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife in less than 7 minutes and 12 seconds.
