2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe Gets Official Racecar Conversion Sketch for 2016 DTM Season

If Mercedes-AMG GT is the starting point for the car destined to represent the Stuttgart brand in GT3 competitions, for DTM, this honour has fallen on Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe's shoulders.

It doesn't really come as a surprise since this has been the norm for many years now, the sporty C-Class Coupe providing the perfect platform for competing against the likes of Audi A5 DTM and BMW M4 DTM. And here we are, looking at the first official sketch of the coupe's racecar incarnation.

The new Mercedes-AMG DTM car will have its work cut out for it because it's replacing the most successful car in DTM history. The outgoing AMG Mercedes C-Class has won 85 races out of a total of 159 possible.

The new Mercedes-AMG C 63 Coupé will again set new standards for driving dynamics and design. So, the vehicle provides the ideal basis for our DTM car,” said Head of Mercedes-AMG DTM Ulrich Fritz. “I’m already looking forward to seeing the new Mercedes-AMG C 63 DTM compete in 2016. Our aim with this vehicle is, of course, to continue the Mercedes-Benz success story in the DTM.”

These are just sketches, but they show how aggressive the new Mercedes-AMG DTM car might look like. With a seriously widened body, a huge rear wing, flared wheel arches, bonnet cut-outs and a ridiculous front apron, the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe DTM looks set to hug the asphalt on every track in the 2016 DTM season calendar.

However, the most radical design features are to be found at the rear, where there's the mandatory scary-looking air diffuser and also a pair of square air-vents in sharp contrast with the more rounded shapes on the rest of the car.

The DTM - which stands for Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters - is the most popular touring championship, even though it competes against the WTCC (World Touring Car Championship) and that's mainly thanks to the three manufacturers competing: the three German premium rivals, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW.

The 2015 DTM season is yet to come to a conclusion, with the final races to be held in September. Expect Mercedes-AMG DTM to make further announcements about their next season's car shortly, but until then you can savour these four sketches.
