2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet Spied for the First Time, Looks Production Ready

The new Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupé was launched with the promise of “the sportiest C-Class ever.” The convertible version won’t do anything to change that, but that doesn’t mean the C63 Cabriolet won’t be tremendously fun to drive.

Open top cars have this weird property of connecting the car and driver even more, even though the human side is more exposed to the elements. It’s more of an emotional link than the actual mechanical communication that happens in an enclosed sports car.

That being said, expect the C63 Cabriolet to drive almost just as well as the Coupé. In fact, unless you actually intend to take them to the limit, the differences will remain hidden. It was the same with the S63 Coupé and the S63 Cabriolet, and there’s no reason for the smaller C-Class to follow a different recipe.

Unlike the S-Class Coupé/Cabriolet conversion, the C63 Cabriolet doesn’t seem to have grown in length, the engineers managing to find a way of housing the folding roof mechanism within the same overall dimensions of the car. Will that come with a penalty for the luggage compartment? Well, it’s a convertible, so what do you expect?

On the outside, the Cabriolet will come with a slightly smaller greenhouse area than the Coupé, but the differences seem to be minor. Other than the changes imposed by the new roof, expect the lower part of the car to look just about the same, which is very good news indeed since the C63 Coupé is one of the best designs Mercedes-AMG has come up with lately. And bear in mind the AMG GT is part of this “lately” period.

The front end looks planted and hungry for asphalt, while the rear sweeps back like a teardrop for a very aerodynamically-looking (at least) shape. Everything is topped off with a pair of parallelepipedic double exhausts and some seriously wide rear tires.

The engine and transmission combination should be carried over unchanged, which means 476 hp for the standard version and 510 hp for the faster S. Due to the added weight, performance figures should be affected by something like 0.1 seconds for the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint, while fuel efficiency should also register slightly worse results. As things stand, the AMG C63 S Coupé does 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds and has a combined fuel consumption rating of 26.4 mpg (8.9 l/100 km).

The new Mercedes-AMG C63 Cabriolet is expected to debut during the first half of 2016, which means it will probably be heading to Geneva in March, as the NAIAS is too early on, but that’s just speculation.
