Our spy photographers captured a 2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 Cabriolet (A205) testing in sunny Spain. If the name of this German drop-top doesn’t sound too familiar to you, that’s because Mercedes-Benz is planning to rename its 450 AMG Sport lineup to AMG 43. The trend started with the recent introduction of the Mercedes-AMG SLC43.
As a brief refresher, the SLC43 is the facelifted version of the SLK 55 AMG. With the facelift, the small roadster swapped the SLK’s eight-cylinder motor for a 3.0-liter V6 biturbo engine, the unit you’ll also find on the C450 AMG Sport and GLE450 AMG. One theory according to which the latter models will be renamed C43 and GLE43 is that "43" is a fitting nod to the proper C43 AMG of times past. That's fine by us.

Internally referred to as the A205, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 Cabriolet will be the three-pointed star’s weapon against the BMW 435i Cabriolet and the next-generation Audi S5 Cabriolet. Just like its 4-door sibling, the Mercedes-AMG C43 Cabriolet will only be available with 4MATIC all-wheel-drive and a 7G-TRONIC Plus automatic transmission tuned for immediate response times.

Compared to the lesser variants of the C-Class Cabriolet, the 4-seater convertible from Mercedes-AMG differentiates itself with bits and pieces such as the huge air intakes in the flared front bumper, massive alloy wheels and dual exhaust tips split in the middle. The interior will also employ Affalterbach-grade trim, albeit not as cool-looking as the Mercedes-AMG C63 S’ carbon fiber center console and Alcantara trim.

Slated to be launched after the C-Class Cabriolet debuts this spring, the 2017 Mercedes-AMG C43 Cabriolet will make use of 367 horsepower (270 kW) and 520 Nm (383 lb-ft) of torque. That’ll be enough for a sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5 clicks, give or take one tenth of a second.

On a side note, the C43 lineup won't adhere to Affalterbach's greatest policy of "One man, One Engine." That only applies to the 2.0-liter turbo of the A45, 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 of the C63 and AMG GT, 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 that is about to be replaced and the behemoth 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 from the "65" model.
