Hours before its official debut, the 2017 Land Rover Discovery has been leaked in a promo video on the automaker’s Australian website. As expected, the Discovery has grown soft, which is fine as long as you’re not a body-on-frame diehard.
As we explained time and time again, the third-gen Discovery is a unibody due to the Land Rover PLA platform. Shared with the Range Rover Sport, the Premium Lightweight Architecture isn’t just lighter than the ladder-frame chassis of the Discovery 3 and 4. It also translates to better handling.

Under the hood, the next-generation four-wheel-drive system of the Discovery 5 will be aided by an automatic transmission from ZF and an engine lineup that will include four- and six-cylinder units. A 2.0-liter Ingenium turbo diesel will be the starting point, churning out a meaty 240 PS (237 HP).

As reported by CarAdvice, the adjacent pics are, in fact, stills from a video that was temporarily live on the Land Rover Australia website. From a design standpoint, the Discovery is heavily inspired by the Discovery Sport. But as compared to its brother, the Discovery doesn’t have a pedestrian airbag.

Slated to take on the likes of the brilliant Volvo XC90 and the slightly uninspiring Acura MDX, the third-gen Discovery will probably arrive in the U.S. for the model year 2018. Creature comforts will include as many as nine USB ports, Intelligent Seat Technology, and up to seven seats. Despite it going soft, the Discovery will definitely hold its own off the beaten path.

Other than the jacked-up ride height, adjustable air suspension, and intelligent four-wheel-drive system, rumors suggest that a laser system will scan the terrain in front of the car, then adjust the Discovery's suspension, transmission, and 4x4 system accordingly. Another addition is rumored to come in the form of a projecting system that gives the impression of a transparent hood, thus helping the driver see what’s beneath the car.
