In production since 2011, the Lamborghini Aventador is getting a bit old now, as in yesterday’s news. More than 5,000 examples of the breed were made in about five and a half years, which is saying something about how exclusive this raging bull is in the hard-knock world of supercars. Now, though, it’s high time for an update.
In the face of newcomers such as the 2017 Ford GT, a car that’s more focused on power-to-weight rather than out-and-out horsepower, the old-school Aventador is as relevant as Skrillex’s music is to your grandpa. But contrary to popular belief, an old dog can be taught new tricks. Cue the mid-cycle refresh of the Aventador, cruising about on the Nurburgring and spitting flames out of three exhaust pipes.
Even though it sports one less tailpipe than the pre-facelift Aventador, the 2017 Lamborghini Aventador’s exhaust system is housed within a redesigned exhaust terminal. It resembles that of the Murcielago LP640, albeit it’s not as round. The taillights of this prototype don’t appear to differ at all from the current units, yet the rear end features a lot more chicken wire than before, plus an Aventador SV-inspired aerodynamic diffuser and two intakes located on top of the rear fenders.
At the front, the SV treatment continues with sharp styling cues, better aero, and two additional air ducts. Along with the more aggressive redesign, the Aventador is in for a power bump. Nobody except Lamborghini knows for sure about how many more ponies the manufacturer will extract from the 6.5-liter V12, but it’s safe to assume that we are in for at least 20 PS (20 hp) more, 40 PS (39 hp) at the most.
Other than the obligatory dose of added aggression, the V12-powered raging bull from Sant’Agata Bolognese is also expected to pride itself on more color combos for the interior. On the tech front, the Aventador is already equipped with all the bells and whistles one can wish for in such an exotic machine, traffic data and sat nav included.
