Slated to go on sale in the near future, the 2017 Kia Forte is better in every single way compared to its predecessor. The biggest changes comes in the form of a more efficient engine and an updated automatic.
Following best-ever sales in calendar year 2015, 2016 sees the Forte drop the 1.8-liter four-banger and welcome a new Atkinson cycle engine. The mill displaces 2.0 liters and it’s good for 147 ponies at 6,200 rpm and 132 pound-foot at 4,500 rpm.
Compared to yesteryear’s powerplant, the 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engine is one horsepower down and one pound-foot of torque up on its predecessor. Engineered for improved fuel economy, the new unit can be paired to a six-speed manual transmission or an updated six-speed automatic. A 2.0-liter GDI which produces 164 ponies and 151 pound-foot is also available (exclusively with the six-speed automatic).
When the automatic is paired with the 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle engine, the fuel economy of the 2017 Kia Forte is 29 mpg city and 38 mpg highway. The 2016 model year will deliver 39 mpg highway, yet the new Forte trumps it in the city (29 versus 26 mpg) and on the combined driving cycle (32 versus 31 mpg).
The compact-sized Forte will go on sale in three forms. The mid-range S trim level brings some sportiness to the table with the addition of a sportier suspension, 16-inch alloy wheels, LED positioning lights, a chrome exhaust tip, and a rear spoiler. The 2017 Kia Forte Sedan will be made in Monterrey, Mexico.
There’s still no information available on the 2017 MY updates for the Forte5 and Forte Koup. Speaking of information, Kia didn't say anything about the pricing of the revised Forte Sedan either. The only reference points we have at the time of writing is the MSRP for the 2016 Kia Forte family. Sans the $850 destination and handling, the sedan starts from $15,990, the hatchback from $18,090, and the coupe from $19,890.
