In May 2014, Jeep held a press conference during the FCA Investor Day. Mike Manley told the media that the Jeep Patriot and Jeep Compass are to be discontinued next year, which incidentally marks the brand's 75th anniversary. In their place, Manley promised us a model currently known as the C-SUV.
According to AutoExpress, we should look forward to an all-new model that will bear the Compass nameplate. Estimated time of arrival? Geneva Motor Show 2016, which means that the new Jeep Compass should arrive in the U. S. of A. as a 2017 model.
The British publication claims that "bosses have confirmed" the mid-size crossover SUV from Jeep, and we have a sneaking suspicion that may be the truth. On another note, it will be sad to lose a moniker as evocative and American as Patriot. But life moves on and Fiat-Chrysler has to do its thing in order to stay ahead of the game. What about this C-SUV then? To be slotted above the Renegade but under the Cherokee, the 2017 Compass will use the Small US Wide 4x4 or the Compact US Wide platform.
In Europe, the all-new Jeep model should be offered with a 2.2-liter MultiJet turbo diesel engine that develops up to 200 horsepower and 440 Nm (324 lb-ft) of torque. A direct injected and turbocharged 2-liter four-cylinder should be available in the United States, coupled to a six-speed manual or a ZF-developed nine-speed automatic transmission. Our spy photographers captured the 2017 Jeep Compass in prototype form, hiding as a stretched Renegade. Looks like something Frankestein would drive, doesn't it?
Will it be riddled with transmission and software problems like the Cherokee? Only time will tell, but we have this certain feeling in our guts that the all-new Jeep Compass will sell like hot cakes. Whether it will have the upper hand against rivals such as the 2016 Mazda CX-5, we'll have to wait and see...
