2017 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid Offers 27-Mile EV Range With New Colors

A few days ago, Porsche revealed the plug-in hybrid version of the new Panamera. But even if you don't have $100,000 to spend on a car, you can still enjoy the best of both worlds with the Hyundai Sonata PHEV.

2017 model year changes have been announced and... there are no changes, really. The Sonata Plug-in Hybrid still uses a 154 hp 2.0-liter engine and an electric motor. The price is also the same at $34,600.

The electric gubbins consist of a 9.8 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack, more than five times larger than the Sonata Hybrid’s battery, and a 50 kW electric motor in place of a torque converter. Combined, they can deliver 202 horsepower through a conventional 6-speed automatic, which Hyundai chose because it's more pleasurable.

The 2017 model year Sonata PHEV looks the same as before, but it does receive a new exterior color palette early in the 2017 calendar year, including Hyper White, Nocturne Black, Metropolis Gray and Skyline Blue. Interior seating color choices include cloth or leather seating configurations in gray or a Blue Pearl option for leather seats.

The Sonata Plug-in Hybrids equipped with Blue Pearl leather seats will also have contrast stitching and accent trim pieces.

Regarding the EPA numbers, almost everything stays the same as well. In EV mode, the car will travel for up to 27 miles, compared to the 31 miles of the Panamera we talked about. In hybrid mode, the 2017 Sonata PHEV returns an estimated 39 mpg combined, which is a slight downgrade from the 40 mpg of the 2016 model.

As standard, the Sonata PHEV comes with 17-inch Eco-spoke alloys, hands-free trunk, Dimension premium audio system, and an8-inch touchscreen navigation system. Available from $38,600, the Limited model comes with Driver memory seat, ventilated front seats, and Smart Cruise Control. New for 2017 is the Limited with Blue Pearl Interior, which is a no-cost option.
