2017 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Achieves 42 MPG Combined, Adds More Technology

Currently in its seventh generation, the Hyundai Sonata is an honest and straightforward mid-size sedan. Even for the eco-friendly public, the Sonata can be had in hybrid form. And for the incoming model year, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is even better.

The biggest news is the addition of a suite of technological enhancements. Standard audio equipment now includes a 7.0-inch high-resolution color touchscreen plus HD Radio. What’s more, the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid also comes with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, as well as the next-generation Blue Link Connected Car system completely as standard.

Other than that, early 2017 will see the exterior and interior color palette grow. Inside, the name of the game comes in the form of Blue Pearl leather seats with contrast stitching and trim accent pieces. Outside, the Sonata Hybrid can be finished in Astral Blue, Skyline Blue, Ion Silver, Metropolis Gray, Nocturne Black, Hyper White, and Cosmopolitan Red.

In terms of pricing, there are three models to choose from: Sonata Hybrid ($26,000 + $835 delivery), Sonata Hybrid Limited ($30,100 + $835 delivery), Sonata Hybrid Limited with Blue Pearl interior ($30,100 + $835 delivery). Bear in mind, however, that the EPA-rated fuel economy figures for the Hybrid and the Hybrid Limited vary to a slight extent.

For the Hybrid, you’re looking at 42 mpg combined (39 mpg city, 45 mpg highway). The Hybrid Limited models, on the other hand, top out at 40 mpg combined (38 mpg city, 43 mpg highway). Be that as it may, all variants of the Sonata Hybrid breed are powered by a 2.0-liter GDI four-cylinder engine and an electric motor with an output of 38 kilowatts.

In both cases, the lithium-ion polymer battery has a capacity of 1.62 kWh. With a total estimated range of more than 650 miles under typical driving conditions and a cargo volume of 13.3 cubic feet, the Sonata Hybrid remains a tough cookie to crack for the more modern 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid.
